How to Evaluate a Shared Web Host
The nicest thing about a shared web host is price. Very low, we may say. A shared web host can charge as low as $10 per month with 3 GIG bandwidth. But behind this low price is a hidden danger. Yes, there is a hidden technical danger that your shared web host will not tell you. There is the risk of sharing the same IP address with others on the server. NOTE: An IP address identifies a machine on the internet. Now the explanation: If a server shares the same IP address, then every data that is sent from it will have the same identity. So your website will have the same identity with all of the others on it. This way, your pages cannot be technically distinguished from others. In ordinary terms, it means that, if 6 websites are hosted on one server and fraud occurs in one of the sites, your site will be listed as one of the avenues through which the fraud occurred. Technically, data to and from web servers are described by the IP address and not the website. That is why they are called virtual hosting. Virtual because you don't have an IP address of you own. You don’t exist on your own. You exist only in imagination ! Now let's examine the danger. If a website on your server tries to spam or manipulate search engine rankings, then the search engine company will ban the IP address which will unfairly affect your site. In another scenario, if there is suspicion with your IP address, then the security agencies can put you under investigation because you co-operate on that IP address. So the next time you ask for shared web host service, ask the company if they provide unique IP addresses for their clients on the shared web host. If they don't you might want to consider looking elsewhere. There are millions of web hosts on the net.
